About

Hi, I am Heather Diehl and I’m a freelance photographer in Chapel Hill, NC, and Baltimore, MD. The moment I first picked up a camera I fell in love with the art of photography and as I explore different genres of photography I have only become more passionate about it. I started taking photos to capture the beauty in the world around me and moments with my friends and family. However, now I have expanded to see the power photography can have to showcase strong emotions, tell stories, and effect change, which is what I aim to do with my work.

Photography being such a diverse art form has compelled me to seek a range of different experiences. I have experience with freelance photography that includes anniversary or engagement photos, family portraits, event coverage, headshots, and graduation photos. Additionally, I work for the Daily Tar Heel, growing my skills as a photojournalist and sports photographer. As a marketing assistant at UNC Campus Recreation, I contribute by photographing events, intramural and club sports, and helping curate content for our social media platforms with over 10k followers. Finally, I have been exploring deeper levels of creativity with my photography by working for campus magazines such as Coulture and Z-Magazine where I have pitched, planned, and executed conceptual photoshoots that are fashion focused.

I am originally from Baltimore, MD, and am currently in my second year at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. I am pursuing a BA in Media and Journalism, a BA in Sociology, and a minor in Studio Art with a concentration in photography. I have developed my skills with various adobe programs including Lightroom Classic and Premiere Pro. I also have grown my storytelling skills outside of photography through other classes in the Hussman School of Journalism such as “intro to digital storytelling” and “writing and reporting.” I aspire to continue growing as a storyteller and photographer and be able to practice photojournalism that is focused on community improvement and social justice work.
